HistoryCommander Augusto Martins Pereira was born in Sever do Vouga in 1885, in a family connected to foundry and agriculture. At the age of 10 he worked in a foundry in Lisbon, after which he participated in the creation of several foundries in the country. He then moved to the Azores, working in a brother's foundry. He emigrated to the US, working at two foundries in Boston and taking an evening casting course. Returning to the Azores, he acquired his brother's foundry and created other companies. In 1921, at the age of 36, as a result of his determined and entrepreneurial spirit and his quality as a designer, he set up his company in Albergaria-a-Velha.In 1928, he appeared with the brand Alba, which in 1934 obtains the Gold Medal of the Portuguese Industrial Exhibition. In the late 1930s, Alba expanded its facilities to a peripheral area of Albergaria-a-Velha.Due to his business success, Augusto Martins Pereira was awarded the "Comenda de Mérito Industrial" in 1936.In the new factory, of large dimensions (41,000m2), a production circuit worthy of mention for the time was built, constituting one of the most complete foundries in the country, employing more than 700 workers, with daily production of 20 tons. Its growth was exponential and essentially extended to the rest of the country, the former overseas colonies, as well as the United States, Spain, France and Italy. The company created a series of equipment to support the community, particularly in the municipalities of Albergaria-a-Velha and Sever do Vouga. Hospitals, nursing homes, housing for needy families, a support house for orphaned children, a music band, a sports club, among other works, demonstrating a high sense of social responsibility. In 2009, Alba joined the LARUS group, recognised for its experience in design management, thus reinforcing its skills in one of the most appropriate technologies for urban equipment: foundry. The objective is to update Alba's articles with innovative products, reducing production costs and investing in Research and Development.
